Puns for Breakfast: The Anxiety Superpower of Champions!

Puns? Really?

You may be thinking, how can puns be a superpower, and how on Earth do they help with anxiety? After all, we consume valuable calories rolling our eyes and groaning at puns.

Full disclosure: There are no puns in this video. I’ve spared you, and you’re welcome!

I’ve posted a pun per day for the past 5 years. That’s 1,825 puns. But I’m not just doing it to annoy people, I’m doing it for my own sanity. Here’s why.

5 years ago I was consuming too much news and too much negative social media. I made a decision to quit watching the news, and unfollow any unproductive, political, hateful, or negative social media, and instead post a pun first thing in the morning. The results, much like a whiteboard, were remarkable (see what I did there?).

First, it exercised my creative muscle. That in turn makes me more productive throughout the day. Thinking of puns requires that we search the creative areas of our brains, which translates into other areas of our lives.

Second, it eased my anxiety because I wasn’t so focused on the negative things I couldn’t control. I simply hit the unfollow button and moved along.

A third benefit was that people began to play along after some time, and I found my tribe of silly people. I now have more positive friends now, and if I’m ever feeling overwhelmed, I can check my post and see the other creative puns that came out of the pun war.

Puns became my superpower, and in turn became a relief to my anxiety. I hope it can do the same for you!
